Now this is a good idea. Good one, [livejournal.com profile] fmith. And [livejournal.com profile] innerbrat for pointing it out, you get credit too. *g*

So. A meme for those that have ever read any of my [livejournal.com profile] milliways_bar threads.

I want you tell me how I'm doing with my characters. What am I doing right? What am I fucking up? What do I need to stop doing? What do you want me to start doing? Anything at all.

Er, my characters being [livejournal.com profile] shelley_winters, [livejournal.com profile] oneman_onevote, [livejournal.com profile] _diseasedmind and [livejournal.com profile] wwjimmycarterd. All their threads should be in their memories.

Tell me anything. Even if you don't know their canons. Just opinions so I know how I'm doing. *Beams round*

I'm confused by the young!Patrician and old!Patrician thing. What's going on there, was there an explanation I missed, and to what purpose?

I decided to bring Vetinari in from after Night Watch basically because I found the Patrician incredibly hard to play. He's a fantastic character who I love, so I didn't want to give him up - at least not without trying for a bit longer. However, he is also well loved by other people and all the time when I was playing his older self I felt I wasn't getting him right, because in the books, he knows and can see everything that is happening around him by virtue of being the most intelligent person around.

However, in Milliways, there are so many more characters who are also intelligent and perceptive that he loses that, and keeping his reactions in-character but also realistic was terrifying. For example, the time he met Death he was obviously going to be surprised, but that's not something we ever see in the books. Uncharted territory is scary! As I am an extremely new RPer (Milliways was the first thing I've ever participated in, and Vetinari was my first character), I panicked, and almost decided to stop playing, or find another character.

Basically, I then brought in Young!Vetinari because he was the same person, just with less constraints brought on by his position. He is more free to have new experiences and get involved in Milliways events because we don't know what happened after the events of Night Watch - there's a gap which I can fill in. We know that the Patrician has experienced a lot, and what could be a more radical life experience than showing up and getting Bound in Milliways? :D

Good question, and no, there wasn't really an explanation at the time - I wasn't sure how to put it into words back then. But yes. That was why I switched.
