An Asian version could be awesome. Sammo Hung as Uncle Iro. Jet Lee as the Firelord, Ziyi Zhang as Azula. You could have cameos by all the classic martial arts guys as the rest of the White Lotus dudes.

But then why would they bother when they could make another version of Monkey, or film any number of other mythological stories.

To me it's like - the world itself is already largely a mesh of cultural themes based almost exclusively Southeast Asian cultural traditions with some others, but for the most part, it's an "Asian" version world. Why are there a bunch of white people walking around in it? How is that not weird?

Agreed. I was thinking more along the lines of someone like Ang Lee or Zhang Yimou taking it and doing a martial arts film with it. However its an American show, so the chances of that happening are pretty much nil.
