(no subject)
Dec. 4th, 2007 12:22 amIIII had my Choir concert today.
We were doing the concert joint with the Opera society, and my god. Those people are good. (Also, the temptation to swing from the rafters going 'ahahahahahaha!!!!'? Strong.) I wish I'd had singing lessons for longer. (Instead of... four.) But, you know? So are we. It's something I love doing, and feel happy about being proud of, especially when I know I can't sight-read further than following the beat. We performed in St. Bartholomew's church in Brighton, and oooo! Pretty. For someone who's not all that religious (Complicated subject. I'll try and explain it some time, but not today,) I really do love churches, especially old ones. Some of the mosaics were just wonderful, and the atmosphere was lovely... and the acoustics. *Shiny eyes* Pretty!
It was... well, nerve-wracking, as it always is when you conductor hands you some sheet music and says 'Oh, I know we haven't rehearsed this, but we're performing it anyway.' Luckily, it was 'Ding-dong merrily on high,' which I do at least know... god knows what the second sops/altos/tenors/basses thought, since they didn't have as much of the melody. Not to mention, the dynamics that we were informed were in place nearly made my diaphragm explode in the five minutes of rehearsal. No... time... to breathe! *flailflail* But! It was awesome. Even the (several) pieces that none of us were sure on were lovely, and most of them were unaccompanied, too. We also did What Cheer?, All This Time, and the second melody of Away in a Manger, which was very pretty, and nicely unusual, too.
But our main piece was Britten's Ceremony of Carols. And because I love (?) you all, you can listen to a recording of nearly all of it here. It plays in Windows Media straight from the site, or you can download it. That version is obviously performed by a boy's choir in Soprano, Second Soprano, Alto form. We did it Soprano, Second Soprano, Alto, Second Alto, Tenor, Bass. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say ours was better. >_> (SO GOOD. SO. GOOD.) We also had harp accompaniment instead of piano, and the harpist was fantastic. It sent chills up the spine, which... was kind of awkward when trying to sing, but still, amazing. It's such a shame the interlude isn't included on that recording, it's really gorgeous.
If you listen to any of them (you can choose seperate carols here,) do listen to Balulalow. We used a girl soprano instead of a boy, but it is the most haunting lullaby. In that recording, with such young voices, almost creepy. Seriously.
Anyway. :D
That's what I've been doing with my Mondays this term!
