rowanberries: (Opera Ghost/Laughing)
So, I haven't updated in awhile!

I'm still on holiday, and I've been working at the pub on and off (which ranges from awesome to crappy and levels out at about 'not bad!') and seeing various cousins. Umm. Today I bought Battlestar Galactica, the first season, so if I vanish, this is why. The last time I bought a series on a whim was Firefly, so lets hope I enjoy this, too. My sister, on the other hand has been buying horror films like they're going out of style, and I learned something. This thing is: I cannot enjoy gory horror. The most I can manage is things like The Others, which is a twelve. I even have to close my eyes (and ears) on certain bits of Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead.

What it was is this: They were watching House of Wax in the same room where I was playing the Sims 2. (A precarious postition in this household. Once you start, make damn sure you stay there in case a sibling or parent leaps on in your momentary absence. But anyway.) I knew most of what was going to happen, and chose not to turn around and look - apart from once or twice by accident and once to laugh at Elisha Cuthbert's hair - and still I got steadily more freaked out from snatches of sound and said accidental images. Despite the augh-factor, it was even kind of interesting. I knew it wasn't real. I knew the storyline was laughable, the characters were deeply stupid and kind of unpleasant, and Paris Hilton, in one case, but... Why should it be so upsetting when it's patently fake? Hot Fuzz is an even more confusing one, with its use of human biology pastede on yey!

I thought about this for a while - mainly at work. Ahem. There's one particular scene Look ma, spoilers! For several movies! ) Obviously, I just don't enjoy being mindlessly scared. I like there to be some sense to my movies, some kind of justice. Otherwise it's just a twisted nightmare, and I get enough of those alone.

But now, after rambling about what I don't like. here's what I wanted to ask: What do you expect from your horror movies, slasher, ghostie, psychological or otherwise? What makes them good and why? What makes them bad? Talk! That means you, too, Meganlet. You put me through it, now you tell me what you like about them, and about your others, too.
