A rant for [livejournal.com profile] wildwolf15

A rant about the stupidity of 'Vegan Pets'.

So. You want your pet to be vegan, huh? First, you may want to check it's species. Is it a rabbit (or other herbivore)? No? Then guess what. It needs some form of meat. I'm serious. Most animals we humans keep as pets are carnivorous or omnivorous - which means they naturally eat meat. Yes, NATURE, you know, that thing which created our entire existence? The problem with trying to impose your personal morals on animals is, they are YOUR morals. But morals cannot change the individual needs of a helpless creature. Even human vegetarians have to be extremely careful about their diet, because although you can get protein from vegetable sources, they are incomplete proteins. More than one type has to be eaten at a time (Like lentils and egg). Oh, but wait. Vegans have even more limited choices. That's the egg out. Um... Soya protein? Ah yes. But there's a problem with that, too, you see. Animals are conditioned and bred to eat their naturally intended food, which is meat, mostly unprocessed. Heavily processed foods (like tofu and other soya proteins) ARE NOT GOOD FOR THEM. And how do you propose to explain that to your pet? They will eat whatever part of the meal they find most palatable, which (seeing as most DO NOT NATURALLY EAT VEGETABLES) could end up being none to very little. They'll stick to biscuits. Malnutrition, anyone?

And apart from all the possible physical ramifications veganism could have on your animal, where the fuck do people get off imposing their personal beliefs on a helpless dumb animal anyway? That's like baptising your Terrier pup and proclaiming him a Christian. He's not going to believe it. He'll probably just get uncomfortably wet. I'm not the world's greatest animal lover, but even I think it's wrong to make a helpless creature suffer for what you believe is good/right. (And, by the way, it's all well and good that you want to be a vegan. If it's for the environment, good for you. But, uh... Humans are genetic meat-eaters. That's why we have canines. So don't even THINK about condemning those who eat meat.) So, in conclusion: Vegan pets? Don't, unless they are of a naturally herbivore species. It's cruel, rather arrogant, and pretty stupid. After all, if everyone and all animals were vegan, the food chain would be royally fucked. You eat what the hell you want, but leave those that can't defend themselves out of it. Leave the ecosystem be.

Disclaimery thing: I have nothing against vegetarians or vegans. Just those that condemn meat-eaters, or take it too far, right into what amounts to animal abuse. This is all also just my opinion. Thank you.

On a completely unrelated subject, [livejournal.com profile] fmith!!!!!11! April the sex robot from the Buffyverse just showed up in Milliways! If you don't know who she is, check out 'I was made to love you.' *Cackles with glee*

Here, here! While I can see that a vegan/veggie might prefer properly formulated dry food to the meaty stuff, just randomly depriving an omni or carny pet of meat is not on.

Me, I'm a meat eating omnivore and proud of it.
