I'm trying to get more of a handle on Jack's actual thoughts and feelings in canon - rather that just: crazy angsty raaaaaaah. I won't be rewatching all of them, at least not all now, but there are a few, notably Cyberwoman, sinc ethe relationship between Jack and Ianto is interesting, and really starts here, Small Worlds, Greeks Bearing Gifts, They Keep Killing Suzie, and Out of Time until the end of the series.

Yeaaaah, Owen? You and Tosh are practially the same height. That joke doesn't so much work, given that!

You know? Jack sounds very much like he's... well, reading lines here. But I'm giving JB the benefit of the doubt, because this episode is from Ianto's POV, and frankly - at least the way I play him - a lot of the time, Jack is acting. He's a very strange man, and more self-contained than he seems, so I think it works. It's as if he's pretending to be himself, while inside, you know what he's thinking?

Could this be the Doctor?

Aw! Brilliant little Jack-/-Ianto interaction shown there, with Jack doing the pleading mime for coffee while Ianto's terrified he's noticed something amiss... Ahem. Yes. Stopping the characaterbleedy fangirling.

Oh, god, he loves her so much, and... Oh, Ianto. *clutches* Jack's going to be maaaaaad. Oh, Ianto. That should never have happened to you. Fucking Torchwood. You poor boy. That's some severe trauma he's got going, already. No wonder he's so off the wall this entire episode. Jack has not that excuse.

I mean, I already know what his is. That he's crazy.

WHY DOES NOBODY EVER DO WHAT JACK SAYS THE FIRST TIME HE SAYS IT?!

"Resisting the urge to shoot." And that could just be a threat, but I really don't think that's all it is. It's just exactly what he's doing, because he doesn't want to kill Ianto, but oh, the rage. Jack has so very many issues, and right now, they are winning.

Um, Ianto, yes, I am kind of on your side here, but BADLY HANDLED. This is not a friendship thing, this is your job. Your obligation to tell Jack about Lisa, and Jack's to ask you about your life are on two completely different levels, and you are not improving his already wobbly temper. But that's better! Explaining, being rational, that's the way to go.

Oh, and. Yes, I'm getting it. It's tricky, but... Jack's trying to make Ianto realise she's really gone. He doesn't want to kill her/it while he think's that's still his girlfriend.

Oh, ow, the look on his face.

*Snicker* Again with never obeying Jack! Sigh. He's a failure as a boss because nobody pays attention to him.

GWEN YOU ARE A MORON.

Sorry. Second viewing, and it still does that to me. I wonder if the writers made her do that simply because she's a Girl? Tosh? Might made sense, but she's busy, and also not a Main Character (apparently.) Owen, even, would make more sense, as he at least knows they need Jack, although he's not emotional, and DOESN'T know he can't die. Not sexist, my arse. Fuck you, Rusty. Gwen Cooper is a police officer, and apart from Jack himself, the last person in the base to gasp and flail and run directly into the path of danger for no good reason. Argh, that makes me angry.

Anyway.

Wow. Jack's snogs are powerful.

...I like that move. It's scary, but it's a show of how long Jack's been fighting, that he could disarm someone with a gun held on him that easily. And it's also a demonstration of Ianto's uncertaintly, that he didn't pull the trigger. And Jack... Jack is not sane here. Canon says little about what it's like to 'die' as he has just done... twice. But what there was shows that it is awful. He's unstable. And contrasting him with Gwen's calmness there really works.

But no, Ianto. Jack has never considered himself a hero. I mean ever. He knows exactly what he is, and he won't stop. Because he knows that somebody needs to be the monster, in order to save everything. Small Worlds (the one after this episode) gives us that.

And that's that. It helped, I think, but now I need to watch some more Supernatural. Yes.
